The Production And Use Of A36 Steel Products

Posted on

The mechanical properties and impact strength of A36 steel make this material suitable for structural applications. The A36 rating is dependent upon the mechanical properties of the metal and not its chemical composition. Learn about A36 products and the production requirements that a metal fabricator must adhere to.

A36 Metal Materials

A36 steel products contain a low carbon content. The content amount is typically minuscule, in comparison to other steel products that are rated differently than the A36 line of metal goods. Welding, forming, and machining are processes that require steel to be durable and pliable. A36-rated products are suitable for use with all of these applications. The low carbon content can withstand a heat process that takes place during the manufacturing of A36 goods.

The tensile strength rating of A36 steel may vary between metal items. The variation between two steel goods may be due to the shape, thickness, and weight of steel. Manganese, phosphorous, and other alloying elements are added to A36 products. The trace amounts of nickel and chromium that are added to A36 steel could be reflective upon a metal products poor resiliency to corrosion.

The Yield Strength And A Hot Rolling Process

The yield strength of A36 metal must meet a minimum requirement. The fabrication process that is utilized and the size of an end product will reflect upon the targeted yield strength. A36 steel is often manufactured with a hot rolling process. First, a manufacturer will need to assess how an A36 product will be utiized. This type of steel may be used to build bridges, rails that are installed along roadways, and beams that are used during the construction of a commercial structure.

Upon going over the proposed plans for a new manufacturing project, steel and alloying elements will be placed inside of a sleeve. This sleeve is referred to as an ingot holder. The holder will contain the raw metal ingredients while they are heated up. Blocks of steel are formed during this fabrication process. Next, steel is rolled out and formed into bars, rods, panels, and custom pieces.

The ingot will remain hot while steel products are formed. Equipment and tools that are used to roll, cut, bend, and mold A36 steel products will prevent injuries to a machine operator. Once each product contains the dimensions that a set of manufacturing plans outlines, a series of steel materials will be cooled down.
